Born into a musical family, Samuel L. Butts Jr. discovered his passion for rhythm at an early age. Growing up surrounded by the rich traditions of gospel, blues, and R&B, he developed a deep understanding of groove and timing that would become his signature.

Magic Sam's professional career began in the church, where he honed his skills playing for various gospel groups and choirs. This foundation in gospel music provided him with the technical precision and emotional depth that characterizes his playing today. His ability to seamlessly blend traditional gospel chops with contemporary styles quickly caught the attention of established artists.

Over the past 15 years, Magic Sam has become a fixture on the international music scene, touring with Grammy-winning and nominated artists across multiple genres. His versatility has allowed him to work with blues legends like Victor Wainwright & The Train and Bernard Allison Group, R&B powerhouses, gospel icons including Rance Allen, and even experimental acts like Blue Man Group.
